New Delhi, August 27: While the central government released a list of the 100 smart city, On
the other hand the urban development ministry not even know what-what kind of disposal facilities will be provide to the people under this project. The ministry is also unable to tell what development projects are being initiated with the help of Japan in the Prime Minister’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi. This was disclosed based on the RTI filed by Activist P.P. Kapoor.
List of Cities Under Smart City Project
12 million people of the country will directly benefit from Smart City project. Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu while releasing the list said 98 proposed Smart City has a population of about 12 million which is 35 per cent of the country’s total urban population, according to the 2011 census.
According to the structure of the selected cities, 35 towns whose population is between one million to five million. There are 21 cities with a population of five million to 10 million between.
There are 25 cities whose population is between 10 million to 25 million. There are five cities whose population is between 25 million to 50 million. Four cities – Chennai, Greater Hyderabad, Greater Mumbai and Ahmedabad – has more than the population of 50-50 million.
Among the selected 98 cities 24 are capitals, the other 24 commercial and industrial centers, 18 are important cultural and tourism centers, five cities are port and three educational and health care centers. Despite a population of a million or less we have included few other in the list, Silvassa, Diu, Kavaratti, Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim’s Namchi.
Nine capitals that has not been included in the Smart City project are Patna, Itanagar, Shimla, Bangalore, Daman, Thiruvananthapuram, Puducherry, Gangtok and Kohima. The New Town near Kolkata in West Bengal, Goa’s capital Panaji, Dharamsala of Himachal Pradesh, are the eight cities which are in the list of smart cities.
