He said that income is increasing, the number of income tax payers is increasing, which is being used to give direction to development. The Finance Minister said that when tax is collected from a state, its effect is immediately visible to the public.

Sitharaman said that I feel sad that if such a better building was found 10-15 years ago, people would have been easier to work and it would have a better effect. Regarding the construction of Direct Tax Bhavan, he said though the land for this was taken in 2002 but the initiative to start the construction was taken in 2017 and it was completed in three years. He raised the question whether there is any account of 15 years when we had the land but no effort was made to build the building. He said that the story of this building itself tells how we use our resources. Sitharaman said that she is happy to say that the mentality of lethargy which was formed has been broken.

Talking about the changes in the country due to income tax, Sitharaman mentioned the schemes being run by the government, from the Prime Minister’s Har Ghar Jal Yojana, free treatment, free food grains, old age, widow and disabled pension etc. He highlighted and told how much benefit the public gets from income tax. He said, “These projects are not possible unless there is improvement in tax collection.” He said that the states have to pay taxes. As part of the transfer, the Center paid the March installment in advance so that their spending on infrastructure was not hampered. He said that continuous efforts are being made to ensure that there is no hindrance in the ongoing works in the infrastructure sector.

Sitharaman appreciated the works of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that Uttar Pradesh always gets the guidance of the Finance Minister. When she was the Defense Minister, the Defense Corridor was started in the state. Referring to the achievements of the ‘Defense Corridor’, Yogi said that Uttar Pradesh is moving fast in the direction of development. He said that Purvanchal and Bundelkhand had lagged behind in the race of development after independence, but the government is giving speed to these two areas through expressways. Purvanchal Expressway has been inaugurated and Bundelkhand Expressway is about to be inaugurated.

Appreciating the positive efforts of the Finance Minister for the development of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi said that income tax is the biggest source of income in the country, but in Uttar Pradesh, we see it linked to GST and the state has made a big contribution to it. The Chief Minister said that Uttar Pradesh took less support of ‘enforcement’, more recourse to dialogue. Yogi said that a normal entrepreneur wants to pay taxes but is so scared of Inspector Raj and complicated process that he does not want to go there. He said that investments were not made in Uttar Pradesh as entrepreneurs felt the danger of security of capital as well as their own security, but today the law and order situation here is an example and the state has associated itself with all the reforms of the Centre. And today this state is second in ease of doing business.

Addressing the function, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary said that due to the construction of Direct Tax Bhavan, there will be ease in work and there will be financial savings. He said that the speed at which Uttar Pradesh is growing under the leadership of the Chief Minister has given rise to hope. Law and order has improved in the state and investment is taking place. Chowdhary said that Uttar Pradesh is a little behind in revenue collection but in the coming time the place of the state will be prominently included in the list of taxpayers of the country. Several speakers including Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj addressed the program. Many important people including State Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna and Law Minister Brajesh Pathak were present on this occasion. Nirmala Sitharaman also participated as the chief guest at the decoration ceremony to honor the officers and employees of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs with various awards in Lucknow today.
